A Supernatural Encounter at Planet Wisdom
A Supernatural Encounter
at Planet Wisdom
Seventeen youth and five brave adults from our church traveled to
Dallas, Texas, last weekend for a youth conference—Planet Wisdom. While the
trip was short, it was significant for our souls and our spiritual lives. The theme this year was “Supernatural.” All weekend long we heard speakers teaching
us about the role of the Holy Spirit in the lives of those who follow Jesus. For many of our youth, this subject was new
and fresh. We learned the Holy Spirit is
always with us—encouraging and equipping us to live a life of faith. Each student was provided an interactive
journal where they could doodle, write, draw, and interact with the lesson
given by each speaker. The journal
helped students (and adults) focus and remember each teaching.
In addition to our sessions, we also ate delicious food, laughed
at comedians until our bellies hurt, and sang our hearts out to many worship
songs. Students voices echoed in the
large sanctuary at Irving Bible Church: “What a beautiful name it is, what a
beautiful name it is, the name of Jesus Christ my King. What a beautiful name it is, nothing compares
to this. What a beautiful name it is,
the name of Jesus.” There is something
so beautiful and powerful about a room full of 2,000 teenagers singing and
believing this truth.
By far the most impactful moment for me as their youth minister
was a small group exercise on Saturday. We divided our high school and middle school
into two groups. Julie Hedgepeth and
Josh Yarborough took our middle schoolers.
Eric Vandiver, Robyn Miller, and myself took the high school. The leaders were encouraged to go first to
set the example. The activity was to
share a lie that you often believe about yourself with the group. After sharing, the group was to respond back
to you by telling you why the lie is not true.
One after another, each person in the group affirmed the one who shared,
telling them the truth of how God and our community sees them. We encountered God in a supernatural way at
Planet Wisdom through this exercise. It
was a moment we will never forget!
If you do not already, please
pray for our students here at FBC. With
recent news of another school shooting, there is more anxiety than normal
crowding the lives of our teenagers.
Your presence in their lives and the power of your prayers is immensely
important. Every moment you see our
youth in the halls of the church, in the pews next to you, or downstairs during
Wednesday night supper, take every opportunity to love them with the love of
Jesus. Our teenagers are wonders to behold!
